Hike the Igishigishigi Trail & Canopy Walk in Nyungwe Forest

Igishigishigi Trail is a short path in the beautiful forest of Nyungwe National Park. Visitors can enjoy views of the forest from a raised walkway, where you can see many different birds and groups of monkeys. The trail is 2.1 km long, and steady hikers usually take about one hour and thirty minutes to complete it.
The trail is at an elevation of 2,295 meters above sea level. It is named after a giant fern tree found along the path. This tree became well known after the canopy walk was built nearby, close to Uwinka, overlooking Nyungwe forest.
The canopy walk is one of the activities you can enjoy in the area. It runs in two sessions: morning and afternoon. The morning session starts at 9:00 am, and the afternoon session begins at 3:00 pm. This gives visitors flexible options to explore the green forest. From this trail, you can also connect to longer trails like Umoyovu or Imbaraga.
Some parts of the trail can be confusing, so it is best to go with a tour guide. A guide will show you the right way and keep you safe. The hike usually begins with a short briefing. It is important to follow all the instructions to avoid any danger. If you ignore the rules and get into trouble, you may have to face penalties.
This hike can be tiring and make you thirsty. It is recommended to bring water bottles and snacks in case you get hungry. Wear clothes that protect you from insects in the forest. Also, carry a first aid kit because accidents can happen, especially in the wet season when the ground is muddy and slippery. Raincoats and waterproof bags will protect your belongings from getting wet. If you cannot carry your bag, there are porters who can help carry your things for a reasonable fee.
Igishigishigi Trail is a great choice for tourists who want to stretch their legs and enjoy nature.
