2-Day Mount Karisimbi Hike | Volcano Trek in Rwanda

This 2-day Karisimbi Hiking Adventure takes you to Mt. Karisimbi, the highest volcano in the Virunga Mountains at 4,507 meters. On day one, your driver picks you up early in Kigali and takes you to the park office for a briefing.

Then you hike with a ranger, guides, and porters, enjoying views of nearby volcanoes and wildlife. The hike takes 6 to 7 hours to reach your campsite at 3,700 meters, where you spend the night.

On day two of this Rwanda adventure, you hike to the summit by sunrise, enjoy the views, take photos, then hike down. After lunch, return to Kigali, ending the adventure.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Kigali to Volcanoes National Park – Start hike

Start very early from your hotel or home in Kigali. Your tour driver will pick you up around 5:00 am and take you to the park head office for a briefing.

You will then begin your hike with a ranger guide, other guides, and some porters. Enjoy views of the Nyamuragira and Nyiragongo volcanoes along the way. You may also see some primates and different birds.

The hike can be hard but is very exciting and fun. It takes about 6 to 7 hours to reach your campsite at 3,700 meters above sea level, where you will spend the night.

Day 2: Summit day and departure

Wake up early, have breakfast, and continue your hike up Mt. Karisimbi. Reach the summit by sunrise and enjoy views of the Virunga volcanoes, green plants, and farmed slopes.

Take photos and enjoy the moment before hiking back down to the base.

Your tour driver will meet you and take you for lunch. Later, drive back to Kigali to your hotel. This ends your hiking adventure.
