Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Kigali airport pick-up
Welcome to Rwanda. Your safari guide will pick you up from the airport and drive you to your hotel in Kigali city. Overnight at the hotel in Kigali.
Day 2: City tour and transfer to Akagera National Park
Take a city tour around Kigali, visiting places of cultural and historical importance like the Kigali Genocide Memorial. After lunch, drive to Akagera National Park, where you will have a late afternoon or early evening game drive. Return to your lodge for overnight.
Day 3: Game drives in Akagera National Park
Explore different areas of Akagera, including the lake region, for maximum game viewing. Look out for lions, bushbucks, buffaloes, olive baboons, rhinos, warthogs, leopards, giraffes, elephants, zebras, hyenas, oribis, waterbucks, impalas, mongoose, monkeys, and more.
Take an afternoon boat safari on Lake Ihema. Overnight at the lodge.
Day 4: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park
You can choose a guided nature walk or a hot air balloon safari on your last morning in Akagera National Park. Depart to Nyungwe Forest National Park via Kigali, with stopovers at places of interest, to stretch your legs and have lunch at Huye. You will reach Nyungwe in the late evening, check in at the lodge, and settle in for the night and dinner. Overnight at your lodge in Nyungwe.
Day 5: Chimpanzee trekking and canopy walk – Nyungwe Forest
Nyungwe Forest National Park is home to 13 primate species, including chimpanzees, which are a major attraction. As you track the habituated chimpanzees, look around for other primates and different bird species.
Enjoy an afternoon canopy walk after the chimpanzee trek. Overnight at the lodge.
Day 6: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Take a scenic road trip of about 6 hours to Volcanoes National Park, with stopovers along the way to enjoy the views and to have lunch. Overnight at the lodge.
Day 7: Gorilla trekking – Volcanoes National Park
Today you will meet the mountain gorillas of Volcanoes National Park during your gorilla trekking experience. The day starts with a briefing at the park head offices where you join a group of 8 visitors and are assigned a gorilla family to trek.
Drive to the trailhead and start your trek. It may last a couple of hours depending on the location of the gorillas. Return to your lodge for late lunch and spend the rest of the day at leisure. Overnight at the lodge.
Day 8-9: Gorilla Guardians Village and Lake Kivu Exploration
On your last morning in Volcanoes National Park, visit the Gorilla Guardians Village, formerly known as Iby’iwacu Village, for an authentic Rwanda cultural experience. Take part in activities like traditional dance and folk songs.
After the village visit, transfer to Lake Kivu where you will spend the remaining days of the safari. Relax at the beaches of Lake Kivu and take part in different activities like a boat trip, island visit, kayaking, and others. Overnight in Lake Kivu.
Day 10: End of the 10-day Rwanda Safari
Wake up, have breakfast, and be driven back to Kigali for a drop-off at Kigali International Airport.
