Mountain Mikeno is an extinct volcanic mountain located in the Democratic Republic of Congo and is one of the eight mountains in the Virunga Mountain range.
Mikeno Mountain is the second highest among the Virunga Mountains with a height of 4,437 meters. The mountain has harsh slopes that do not favor human settlement, which is the reason behind its name “Mikeno,” meaning “poor” in the local language.
It is located about 3.5 miles northwest of Mount Karisimbi, which is the highest peak. Mount Mikeno is the highest mountain in DRC and the 13th highest in Africa. Mountain Mikeno is well known for the mountain gorillas that live on its lower slopes.
Mount Mikeno borders Uganda and Rwanda near Virunga National Park, which is one of Africa’s oldest national parks. The mountain receives relief rainfall as winds hit its slopes, making its soils fertile.
Mount Mikeno is considered the hardest mountain to climb among all the Virunga Mountains due to its poor slopes. However, the beautiful views of the great East African Rift Valley at its peak make it worth the challenge.
Hiking Mount Mikeno starts at Bukima Patrol Post, where tourists get a chance to see mountain gorillas. It is a four-hour trek to Kabara Campsite.
Kabara Campsite is known for being the burial place of Carl Akeley, who died of fever while hiking the mountain in 1926.
Most hikers stop at this point because of the harsh slopes and altitude sickness. It requires determined and experienced hikers to reach the summit peak.
Reaching the summit from the base of the mountain may take eight hours to a full day, making it a very hard task.
Mount Mikeno is mostly known for its lower slopes being home to the endangered mountain gorillas. Gorilla trekking is the main activity done at Virunga National Park, where the mountain is located.
Gorilla permits in Congo cost $400 and allow tourists to view a gorilla group for one hour. Virunga National Park is also home to other wildlife like mammals, non-primates, reptiles, and amphibians.
Tourists who come to trek Mountain Mikeno are treated to varied scenery and a mix of wildlife.
Tourists can also enjoy cultural encounters with the local communities and learn about their cultural norms and rich traditions.
Nature walks are also possible. Congo is filled with rainforests that offer a fresh and cool environment.
When to visit Mount Mikeno
It is recommended to visit Mountain Mikeno during the dry seasons, from June to September and December to February. During these seasons, there is less rain, and the trails are not muddy or slippery.
Hikers are required to carry good strong hiking boots, long trousers and long-sleeved shirts, rain jackets, insect repellents, packed snacks and lunch, water and energy drinks, hats, and other personal items.
Tourists can hire porters for a fee to help carry their luggage during the hike, as the terrain can be difficult.
Where to stay
Visitors do not need to worry about accommodation. Virunga National Park has lodges like Mikeno Lodge, Bukima Tented Camp, Kibumba Tented Camp, and others.
These can be pre-booked, but some may not require advance booking. Since most tourists pass through Kigali, Rwanda, they can also arrange accommodation in Kigali, as the distance to Mikeno is not very far. It is about a four-hour drive.
