Colobus Monkey Trekking in Rwanda – Nyungwe Forest Primate Experience

Colobus monkeys, scientifically known as Colobus angolensis, are about 75 centimeters long and have a gestation period of about four to six months. They live in the lowlands and montane forests of Rwanda, depending mainly on plantain for food.

Despite their long life span of over 20 years, they are hunted by predators such as leopards, large eagles, chimpanzees, and humans, leading to a decrease in their numbers. Even with these challenges, they continue to move through the jungle searching for food.

Unlike other monkeys, colobus monkeys, also known as mutilated monkeys, do not have thumbs, making them unique. They have black fur with a long white mantle, whiskers, a bushy tail, and a beard around their face, which makes them look very adorable.

Colobus monkey hiking adventure is a must-not-miss activity as it takes you to some of the well-known national parks in Rwanda, such as Nyungwe National Park, located in the southern part of the country.

This enables tourists to not only spot the monkeys but also enjoy the surrounding landscapes and see other animals. The journey usually starts in Kigali, the capital, and takes only about five hours to reach the park. Make sure to arrive on time, as the area can accommodate over 400 individuals a day.

There are different shifts arranged to accommodate every visitor, but we recommend the morning shift because the primates are more active in the morning. You will get a chance to see how they search for food, protect themselves, and groom their young ones.

The colobus monkeys are more active than chimpanzees, moving in large numbers, which provides a good opportunity for taking photographs. However, you must have a media permit before taking pictures, as Rwanda has strict rules, and if you are found without the necessary documents, you may be detained.

Back to the trek, it starts with a briefing at Uwinka, which is the starting point. After learning the guidelines to follow while in the forest, you will begin the journey, led by an armed tour guide, ranger, or a porter if you need help carrying your belongings.

You are given one hour to interact with the colobus monkeys before continuing with the trail. You are advised to carry drinking water, insect repellent, waterproof hiking shoes, a rain jacket, and other basic needs.

Always work with the best tour operators to get excellent results on your colobus monkey trekking in Rwanda.
