Animals in Rwanda are countless, both wild and domestic, and are sheltered in different parts of the country.
Taking an animal’s life without a clear reason is illegal in Rwanda, especially for wild species. Poachers are arrested immediately once found, and many organizations have come together to stop the extinction of animal life. Some of the domestic animals include cats, dogs, goats, pigs, cows, and others.
Looking at the wild animals who live in national parks such as Akagera, Volcanoes, Nyungwe, and many more, some feed on meat while others are herbivores that depend on grass. The food chain continues until every wild creature has satisfied its needs.
Some of these species include mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, and monkeys, which are grouped as primates living in the rainforest and highly depending on fruits for survival. There are also giant elephants, zebras, giraffes, and antelopes, which are found in different national parks, each with unique characteristics and behaviors that make them special to see.
You will also find leopards, rhinos, and lions that feed on flesh and are considered the kings of the jungle. The best time to view these wonders is during the dry season when most vegetation has dried, creating clear visibility. On the other hand, during the wet season, you are likely to see more primates because of the many fruits available at that time.
To make your trip easier, you are encouraged to take part in game drives that take you through all corners of the chosen national park. You can also trek high within the volcanoes to discover mountain gorillas, where you will learn about different behaviors of the primates.
Note that you must have a permit for this activity. A nature walk is also recommended if you want to feel the beauty of Africa. While you walk near any wild animals, you are guarded by a tour guide who is equipped with a gun, but in most cases, the gun is used only to scare away animals that may try to attack.
The famous Big Five are another group you should not miss, and they include the lion, African elephant, leopard, buffalo, and rhinoceros. Feel free to capture these beautiful species, but make sure your camera has enough battery and memory cards to store all the memories of a lifetime.
Besides animals, there is also rich bird life with over 700 bird species, such as the African grey parrot, crowned crane, shoebill, and Ruwenzori turaco, among others.
Let us work together and protect nature.
