Lakes of Rwanda – Explore Kivu, Muhazi, and Twin Lakes

The lakes of Rwanda offer a good view of the traditional way of life, where fishing was one of the main economic activities for survival. Wooden canoes were used, and you can still see them today. When you visit some of the lakes, you will see many birds such as pelicans, crowned cranes, and kingfishers, which bring color and joy to your memories.

Lake Muhazi is one of Rwanda’s beautiful lakes, located in the eastern part of the country. It is a good place for boat cruises because it is far from the noise of the city. The place is very peaceful, and you can enjoy fishing or taste fresh fish while watching the sunset over the lake.

Lake Kivu is full of blessings, with many water activities that make it a favorite getaway for many people in Rwanda. The area is well organized, with fun activities like canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing, and beach volleyball. Everyone is welcome to join. You can relax on the soft sand and enjoy grilled fish with your loved ones.

There is also Lake Burera and Lake Buhondo, which are near the gorilla trekking center. This makes it easy to visit both places at once. The Virunga Mountains add more adventure as you look down at the blue waters while also seeing the primates in the forest.

Akagera National Park has ten lakes that are home to aquatic animals and serve as waterholes for wildlife. Here, you can also spot many birds, such as the shoebill stork, papyrus gonolek, double-toothed barbet, blue-headed coucal, red-faced barbet, white-browed coucal, ring-necked francolin, and Souza’s shrike, among others.

Other lakes include Lake Ihema, located inside Akagera, where many animals come to drink water or hunt. You can also visit Lake Rweru, Lake Mugesera, and Lake Cyohoha South, which all have calm waters and are good for fishing. Both local and modern fishing methods are used, such as nets, long lining, and spears. Locals often use smoking or salting to preserve the fish, while other people in towns use different methods.

The lakes of Rwanda are beautiful, and true beauty can only be seen by visiting them again and again.
