The big five animals are the most famous group because they are hard to hunt on foot, and they represent Africa’s top wildlife experiences. Some are fierce and known as kings of the jungle, while others are very large and can kill a human with just one kick.
That is why, when visiting any of the national parks, you are advised to follow the armed tour guide. The big five include elephants, lions, leopards, buffaloes, and rhinoceroses, which can be found in Akagera National Park, Nyungwe National Park, and Volcanoes National Park, all of which have plenty of vegetation. Akagera, located in the eastern part of Rwanda, is the country’s only savanna park and is home to many wild animals.
Among the big five, lions are the most popular because they dominate the jungle. In the past, their numbers went down due to poaching, but the government helped by reintroducing them in 2015, making Rwanda a big five destination again.
Since then, their population has been slowly increasing. Leopards, on the other hand, are skilled at blending into their surroundings. They are usually seen in wooded areas, rocky places, and along riverbanks. You will need an experienced tour guide to help you find them because they are tricky to spot.
The giant elephants are the calmest of the big five. They eat grass and can be seen moving through different areas of the park, from lakeshores to acacia woodlands. The largest herds are often seen near Lake Ihema, where they gather to drink and cool down.
Buffaloes are tough grazers that look calm but become aggressive when threatened. They feed on plants in the park and are also prey for lions.
Rhinoceroses are the rarest of the big five. There are black and white rhinos, usually found in open grasslands and near water. Black rhinos are shy and often alone, while white rhinos are more social and can be seen in small groups.
You are allowed to take photos if you have the right permits. Some tourists prefer to view these animals from safari cars, which operate in shifts to suit everyone. Others enjoy walking safaris with the help of a tour guide.
