Rwanda Chimpanzee Permits – Costs, Booking & Trekking Tips for Nyungwe Forest

Nyungwe National Park is one of the best places to enjoy chimpanzee trekking. The park is home to over 500 chimpanzees. Habituation is done to help these chimpanzees get used to humans.
More than two chimpanzee groups have been habituated. About 60 chimpanzees live inside Nyungwe National Park, while another 30 stay in the dense Cyamudongo forest.
Trekking starts early in the morning with a short briefing. Then, a tour guide leads you on the trail, which only allows eight people per group. Nyungwe receives many trekkers who come to watch chimpanzees feeding or taking care of themselves.
Because of this, it is important to book your trek early to secure a spot. You can also combine your chimpanzee trek with a gorilla safari by traveling to Volcanoes National Park, giving you a unique experience.
Chimpanzees are interesting animals. They share 98% of their DNA with humans and can sometimes be seen standing upright like people. They mostly eat fruit, especially during the dry season when fruit is more common, which keeps them in one place.
When food is scarce, they move around looking for leaves, roots, and insects. They even use sticks to catch ants and eat them.
To protect the chimpanzees, visitors must avoid spreading flu and other diseases because chimpanzees are very sensitive to human sickness. If you need to use the toilet during the trek, you should move away from the trail, dig a deep hole, use it, and then cover it. This helps keep the forest clean and protects the chimpanzees from harm.
You can get a Rwanda chimpanzee permit to enjoy this peaceful experience. There are 64 permits available each day, each costing USD 150. In addition to this, you pay USD 100 for a one-night park entrance fee.
If you stay two nights, the fee is USD 150. These permits are much cheaper than gorilla permits, which cost USD 1500.
The permits are issued by the Rwanda Development Board, which manages tourism in the country. You can book directly through the board or get help from a travel agent who will check the availability of your preferred dates.
Book your Rwanda chimpanzee permit early so you don’t miss this special adventure.
