Explore Cyamudongo Forest - Chimpanzee Trekking & Nature Tours in Rwanda

Unlike many forests that face deforestation, Cyamudongo Forest has been well protected by local people because it is located in the mountainous area in the southwest of the country. It covers about 19 square kilometers near Nyungwe National Park.

Due to poaching and some deforestation, Cyamudongo has become separated from the main park, but it still shares much of Nyungwe’s natural life.

Cyamudongo Forest keeps its original beauty with thick, dark vegetation. It attracts many wild animals, including Nyungwe chimpanzees, L’Hoest’s monkeys, Dent’s Mona monkeys, and many bird species.

Nyungwe National Park is home to about 320 bird species, including 29 species found only in the Albertine Rift. You will also see butterflies all around the forest, adding to the rich life you can discover here.

The forest is home to some special plants not found in Nyungwe, such as the orchid Polystachya blue chertiae, discovered ten years ago. Other plants include Alangium, Cheese Newtonia, and Buchananii, which cover the forest with peaceful colors perfect for filming.

If you like trekking, Cyamudongo is a great place to explore. Here, you can find chimpanzees more easily than in Nyungwe, where trekking is harder. Chimpanzee trekking is led by rangers and guides who know the forest well.

Along the way, you can also spot other primates, birds, and plants. The trek usually takes a few hours. Before starting, you will get a briefing on what to do. Only people aged 15 and older can join the trek, and you need a permit to take part.

Children can enjoy nature walks around the park, where guides show them different plants and explain how they grow. Park staff welcome young visitors and help them enjoy the jungle experience.

After spending time in the forest, you can visit nearby local communities who depend on the forest for herbal medicine, bushmeat, and wood. During the visit, you will see tools used for different activities and may even join in cooking, weaving, or other local crafts.
