Bubble through the clear waters of Lake Ihema, found in the eastern part of Rwanda. It lies in the marshlands of the Akagera River in the south and flows out through a short channel.
The lake is full of life except for fish. You can see hippos, crocodiles, and many birds that rest on the water or along the shores. These birds include the shoebill, herons, jacanas, plovers, hawks, and kingfishers, among others.
Lake Ihema sits at an altitude of 1,292 meters and covers an area of 90 square kilometers. Its depth changes between 5 and 7 meters depending on the season and location.
The lake is surrounded by seasonal and permanent papyrus swamps, which are important habitats for protected animals in the park. It plays a big role in providing water to animals and birds, especially in the dry season. If you want to see many wild animals, visit Lake Ihema in the morning or afternoon. You may also spot some animals hunting at that time.
Fishing was once stopped by a royal order in 1934. Later, a new policy allowed fishing again, but the lake remains protected because it is inside Akagera National Park. One of the main threats to the lake is the spread of water hyacinths. These plants cover the water surface and reduce the amount of oxygen in the lake. This harms water quality and can lead to the loss of other life in the lake.
Lake Ihema is connected to the Akagera River through swamps, which makes it possible for the water to flow toward Lake Victoria and the Nile. Among all the lakes in the Akagera region, Lake Ihema is the largest that lies completely in Rwanda.
Other lakes in the area are shared with neighboring countries. For example, Lake Kivu, which is 2,700 square kilometers, is shared between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, making Ihema the third-largest lake overall.
If you plan to visit Rwanda, make sure to prepare everything early so you are not stopped at the airport or land borders. Foreign visitors must have health insurance before entering the country. It’s also wise to check with your doctor before traveling.
Feel refreshed at Lake Ihema in Rwanda.
