Visit Buhanga Eco Park - A Sacred Cultural Forest in Rwanda

Buhanga Eco Park is a special place in Rwanda that holds great cultural meaning. It tells a story of the past, where it is said that King Gihanga, the founder of the Rwandan kingdom, once lived. The exact time of his reign is unclear because different reports conflict.

The park has cut lava rocks and a chair at the edge, believed to be the king’s seat. This was where he was carried after bathing to receive the king’s instruments. It was also seen as a place to receive blessings and protection from the gods. After the ceremonies, the king would be officially named “umwami.” This event was attended by his advisory council, elders, royal sorcerers, and clan heads.

Though the park is small, covering 31 hectares, it is close to Volcanoes National Park, famous for its mountain gorillas. Many visitors come early in the morning to watch the gorillas feed and care for their young.

The park’s landscape is challenging, with rough trails made of cut lava stones weaving through plants and tall trees. But this does not stop visitors, as well-trained tour guides lead the way to keep everyone safe.

They also point out interesting plants and trees, some of which have lived here for over 300 years. While many trees have Greek and Latin names that are hard to pronounce, the local names like Igihondohondo, Umusando, and Ibiganiro are easier to remember.

Buhanga Eco Park is open all year round. The entry fee varies by season and visitor type: foreigners pay $40, while children and students enter free. Foreign residents in Rwanda pay $30, and their children or students pay $25. Rwandan citizens pay 3,000 Rwandan francs, with children paying 2,000. East African citizens pay $25, and their children pay the same. East African foreign residents pay $35, with children charged $25.

The park offers many activities, including golden monkey trekking, game drives, and cultural visits.

Buhanga Eco Park is a great place to visit and enjoy some of Rwanda’s best natural and cultural sights.
