Dian Fossey Grave Trek – Explore Rwanda’s Gorilla Conservation Legacy

Trekking involves visitors walking on foot until they reach their best viewing spot. On the side of Dian Fossey’s grave, the trail starts at Volcanoes National Park headquarters in Kinigi as early as 7:00 am, where you are briefed about what to expect during the trek. By 8:00 am, you start the trek from the Bisoke foothills.

The trail always involves climbing, so you are advised to get a walking stick or hire a porter who will help you carry your luggage so that you do not get tired before covering the 2,967-meter elevation of Mount Karisimbi.

You will pass through the beautiful Hagenia forest zone, which lies between 2,900 and 3,000 meters. Do not lose hope, however hard the journey may feel, because within one to three hours you will be able to see lovely vegetation, birds, and golden monkeys within Karisimbi and Bisoke volcanoes.

The further you go, the more special it becomes as you get a chance to spot the conservation legacy hidden within Volcanoes National Park, home to many wild species and giving you memories for life. Some tourists ask what they should pack during their trekking adventure.

Below is a list of things you can carry:

  • Walking sticks to support you as you climb the slope. Make sure it is strong but not heavy.
  • First aid kit to treat small injuries. It is advised to learn how to use the tools in the kit before the trek.
  • Gardening gloves to protect your hands from dirt and avoid touching some plants directly, as some can be poisonous.
  • Energy-giving snacks
  • Water
  • Rain jacket
  • Long-sleeved T-shirt and trousers

As you continue your journey, you are required to have a permit that proves your payment, which costs $75 and also covers the park ranger guide fees. Travel documents are also important because they show you are allowed to be in Rwanda, so keep them safe.

The trek is done throughout the year, but the best months are June, August, September, December, January, and February. These are the dry months and are considered the peak season when prices are high, so it is advised to book as early as five months in advance.

Get a chance to see the wonders of the world by visiting Dian Fossey’s grave for trekking in Rwanda.
