Golden monkeys are special treasures found in the green bamboo forests of national parks such as Volcanoes and Akagera. These species are very different from the rest of their cousins because they have golden-orange fur that contrasts with their black limbs and tail. They are slightly larger, with males weighing about 12 kg, while females are a little smaller and weigh less.
If you want to start your hiking journey, note that these species are very social, living in groups of about 100 individuals, with strong family structures led by a dominant male.
If you take part in the adventure, the morning shift is recommended. This allows you to watch golden monkeys grooming their young ones, playing, or looking for food.
Hiking into the jungle requires you to be 15 years or older, as you must be strong enough for the journey and able to follow the rules and regulations. Trekking starts at around 8:00 am and offers you one hour with these animals.
There is also another option called habituation, where you spend four hours in the jungle together with researchers. This process helps the primates get used to human presence.
To take part in these activities, you must have a permit. A habituation permit costs $100. For the actual trekking permit, the costs are $60 for foreign non-residents, $40 for foreign residents, and 40,000 shillings for East African residents.
You are advised to book early, especially during peak seasons when many visitors come to the park, to avoid missing out.
To have enough energy for the trek, you will need good rest. Some suggested accommodations include Virunga Lodge, a peaceful place located at the foothills of the Virunga Volcanoes, pointing you straight to the golden monkeys.
Bisate Lodge is another great place with many comforts that connect you directly to nature. The One&Only Gorilla’s Nest offers luxury and amazing architecture, while Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge gives you an elegant stay with beautiful stones and African art.
