Detailed 3-Day Akagera Birding Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Pick up from Kigali to Akagera National Park

Your safari guide will pick you up from your hotel or location in Kigali and drive you east to Akagera National Park. Before leaving Kigali, you will have a short city tour. Arrive at the park in the afternoon, check into your lodge, and have lunch.

Later, enjoy an early evening game drive to get familiar with the Akagera wilderness. Watch for birds and animals as you explore. Overnight at the safari lodge.

Day 2: Bird watching in Akagera National Park

Have an early breakfast and head out for a morning bird watching safari. Watch the birds as they wake up, sing, and fly around looking for food. Akagera National Park is home to over 500 bird species, so you have a good chance to see many in one day.

Look for birds like the red-faced barbet, African fish eagle, grey-backed fiscal, hamerkop, augur buzzard, grey-crowned cranes, raptors, long-crested eagle, widow birds, sunbirds, and bee-eaters. Also watch for animals like elephants, lions, buffaloes, zebras, and giraffes.

Return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, take a boat trip on Lake Ihema for more bird watching. Look for saddle-billed storks, pelicans, common cormorants, water thick-knees, squacco herons, goliath herons, white egrets, the rare shoebill stork, papyrus gonolek, swamp flycatchers, sacred ibis, kingfishers, crakes, and more. Overnight at the lodge.

Day 3: End of birding safari – Departure

After breakfast, your guide will drive you back to Kigali and drop you off at the airport or your preferred place in Kigali city.
