Detailed 5-Day Rwanda Gorillas & Wildlife Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Kigali to Akagera National Park

After breakfast at your hotel, enjoy a half-day city tour of Kigali. Visit places like the Inema Art Center, Kigali Genocide Memorial, and National Museum.

After the tour, have lunch and then drive to Akagera National Park. In the late afternoon, go on a game drive to explore Rwanda’s only Savannah park. Overnight at your safari camp or lodge.

Day 2: Akagera National Park – Game drive & boat trip

Spend the day exploring Akagera with game drives and a boat trip on Lake Ihema. Look out for animals like elephants, lions, zebras, buffaloes, impalas, warthogs, mongooses, hyenas, leopards, rhinos, hippos, waterbucks, and crocodiles.

You will also see many birds such as African fish eagles, goliath herons, red-faced barbets, hamerkops, sacred ibis, storks, flycatchers, widow birds, and grey-crowned cranes. Overnight at your camp or lodge.

Day 3: Akagera National Park to Volcanoes National Park

Start the day with a morning game drive in Akagera, or choose a hot air balloon ride over the Savannah. Then drive to Volcanoes National Park with some stops for lunch and to stretch your legs.

Arrive at Volcanoes National Park, check in, have dinner, and rest. Overnight at the lodge.

Day 4: Volcanoes National Park – Gorilla trekking

Wake early and go to the park offices for a briefing on gorilla trekking. Follow your assigned ranger into the forest to find the mountain gorillas.

Spend one hour with the gorilla family, watching them groom and play. Return to the lodge for overnight.

Day 5: Transfer to Kigali – Departure

Leave Volcanoes National Park and drive back to Kigali. Your guide will drop you at the airport for your flight home. This marks the end of your safari.
