Buhita Border Post | Access Rwanda's Northern Treasures

Buhita border post is close to some of the main tourist places in Rwanda, such as Volcanoes National Park. This park is known for its hills covered with thick green trees and many wild animals.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is also nearby, about 63 kilometers north of Buhita. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that protects mountain gorillas, one of the most popular animals to see in Uganda. From the border post, you can also see Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is home to many herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores.

The parks offer many activities for visitors. You can go trekking, or take game drives where you relax in a vehicle while watching animals. There are usually two game drive times to give all tourists a chance to enjoy.

Visitors can also join cultural experiences, meeting local people and enjoying traditional dances with drums and songs. These events often leave tourists happy and they sometimes tip their guides, but it is wise to tip carefully based on your total costs.

The Buhita border post connects Rwanda to Uganda near Burera District in Rwanda’s Northern Province. It is about 60 kilometers from Kigali, making it easy to reach by road. Even though Buhita is a busy town, visitors should be careful about who they talk to because not everyone has good intentions. It is important to stay close to your guide, who knows the area and African ways of life well.

Security at Buhita is strong to stop illegal items from crossing between the two countries. When crossing, you must have your national ID or passport. After crossing, some nearby places you might visit include Kisoro, Kibale, Byumba, Kigali, Kanungu, and others.

Which places you see depends on the safari you booked. If you do not have enough time before your flight or border closing, it is better to return home to avoid penalties for staying in the country with expired documents.
