Kagitumba Border Post – Rwanda-Uganda Crossing & Travel Tips

Kagitumba border post is a busy place, also called Kagitumba Miram Hills. This border allows travelers to cross between Rwanda and Uganda. It operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so people can cross at any time. This helps reduce traffic at the Katuna border.
Plans are underway to reduce delays at Kagitumba by combining customs and immigration checks between the two countries. When this new system starts, it will cut down waiting times.
The area around Kagitumba has several important places, including the offices of Kagitumba Town Council and Kagitumba Central Market. On the Ugandan side, there is the town of Miram Hills, which lies just north of Kagitumba across the border. This spot is also where River Muvumba joins River Kagera, marking the meeting point of international borders between Uganda and Rwanda.
This busy border plays an important role in tourism and trade between the two countries. It helps many people move across the border and has boosted local business. In 2015, Kagitumba was upgraded to a one-stop border post. It now handles many trucks and buses, making travel faster and easier for passengers.
The post mainly manages freight trucks coming from the port of Mombasa in Kenya to Rwanda, which is a landlocked country. Some goods also pass through Uganda to reach Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This makes moving goods easier even though the countries do not have sea ports.
Miram Hills are located in the Ankole sub-region of Ntungamo District, near Kagitumba border post with Tanzania. It is about 350 kilometers from Kampala and 30 kilometers from Ntungamo town by road. Many visitors use this route to enter Uganda after visiting Rwanda’s interesting places and historical sites. Uganda is home to mountain gorillas and Kibale National Park, known as the world of primates, which is open all year round.
Kagitumba is the easiest border crossing between Rwanda and Uganda. It has been renovated and takes less time to cross compared to Gatuna and Cyanika, which can be crowded and cause delays.
Kagitumba border post is a safe and good route—try to use it on your trip.
