Rusumo One Stop Border Post – Streamlining Rwanda-Tanzania Trade

Rusumo One Stop Border Post - Streamlining Rwanda-Tanzania Trade

Rusumo One Stop Border Post is a symbol of peace and cooperation between Rwanda and Tanzania. It allows people to move easily between the two countries. At this border, officers from both Rwanda and Tanzania work together to make sure people are safe and receive quick services. Every day, over two thousand people cross the border, most of them for business.

The process of crossing is simple if travelers have all the required documents that allow them to enter Rwanda or Tanzania. If someone is missing documents, they may be arrested and sent back to their home country.

If you are traveling from Rwanda to Tanzania, go straight to the main hall. There, you will meet border officers. First, go to the officers on the left side to get stamped out of Tanzania. Rwanda also has an office where you can be stamped out or in, depending on your direction of travel.

People from Europe and the USA who need an East African visa must pay 100 US dollars. If you are driving, you can move your car close to the main building and go through a security check to make sure you are not carrying anything illegal or dangerous. After the check, you will receive an exit stamp from Tanzania.

Next, line up at the Rwandan passport control. At the end, you will be given a small paper slip. Take this slip to the Rwanda Revenue Authority office at the far end of the building to get an invoice for your visa. You can pay by bank, and many travelers prefer to pay in US dollars. After payment, return to the immigration officer. The officer may ask you a few simple questions, such as where you will stay and what you plan to do in Rwanda. If your answers are correct, your visa will be approved.

On the Rwandan side, you must also go to Rwandan customs to get a CDP stamp. You will be checked again to make sure everything is in order.

Crossing from Tanzania to Rwanda also goes smoothly if you follow the rules. The full process takes about one hour. You will first get stamped out of Tanzania, then stamped into Rwanda. If you are from Australia, you do not need to pay for a visa. For customs, a fee of $15,000 is paid as a Temporary Import Permit (TIP), which is valid for 14 days. Payment is simple, and the border post has an ATM that helps speed up the process and saves time.

When people work together, they break down barriers. That is the true purpose of the Rusumo One Stop Border Post.
