Travelers are advised to avoid areas with stagnant water. If camping, they should carry treated mosquito nets and ensure children sleep under them at all times.

Travelers should also avoid going outdoors in the early morning without wearing insect repellent.

If a traveler shows symptoms, he or she should seek medical help immediately. Symptoms to watch for include fever, severe vomiting, general weakness, unusual tiredness, and joint pain.

The government of Rwanda also expects travelers to carry their passports and passport-size photos for identification when entering the country.
