Hike the Isumo Waterfall Trail in Nyungwe National Park

Hike the Isumo Waterfall Trail in Nyungwe National Park

Isumo Waterfall Trail is located inside Nyungwe National Park, which stands at an altitude of 1770 meters. The trail is named after Isumo Waterfall, the park’s largest waterfall. The word “Isumo” comes from Kinyarwanda, the local language.

This trail offers an exciting experience and costs US$50 per person. It includes the canopy walk and the popular chimpanzee trekking that many tourists seek. At about 2.3 km along the trail, you will find peaceful spots filled with cool, fresh air, birds, frogs, ferns, mosses, and lichens.

Early in the morning, surrounded by butterflies and fresh water sparkling on leaves, the guide briefing starts at Gisakura. They explain what you should and should not do while in the forest. Along the way, you will see many beautiful sights, including great views of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Lake Kivu.

The birds will keep you motivated even if you feel tired. If you are fit, you can hike for three to five hours, going up and down steep hills covered with vines and moss. The deeper you go, the more you feel close to nature.

Colorful flowers line the path, like deep pink flowers decorating the ravines, delicate white begonias on benches, and other white flowers with heart-shaped leaves. These sights make your visit very special.

The Isumo Trail leads you to Isumo Waterfall. From there, you can explore other nearby trails like Rukuzi, where you may see chimpanzees in their natural home. If you come early, you might watch their morning routines, like looking for food and caring for their young ones.

Kamiranzovu is another trail you can take, followed by Imbaragi, which is more difficult. If you keep going, you will hear birds, frogs, crickets, cicadas, and see monkeys moving around. The Imbaragi trail is 740 meters long, so it is good to bring snacks, water, a first aid kit, and binoculars to help you see far away.

Other trails in the area include Uwinka and Bigugu, among many others.

Isumo Waterfall Trail is a peaceful path you should visit when you come to Rwanda.
