Lake Mugesera – Bird-watching, Fishing & Scenic Escapes in Eastern Rwanda

Lake Mugesera is one of the large water bodies in Rwanda, located in the Eastern Province. It covers an area of 9,900 acres and sits at an elevation of 4,300 feet above sea level. The lake was formed when the River Nyawarungu flooded a flat valley, creating a large pool of water. Several small streams flow into the lake from high ridges to the north, west, and east.

The lake is home to many animals, including reptiles and water creatures. Frogs, snakes, and crocodiles are the most common. Some locals enjoy fishing here, often singing songs while catching different types of fish. This activity attracts many birds, making the area a great place for bird watching. After a day spent enjoying nature, you can take a walk along the lake’s shore the next day. This walk lets visitors see the lake’s waves and the plants growing on the nearby raised land.

Located southeast of Kigali, Lake Mugesera lies in Rwanda’s central plateau, where the climate is unique. Rain usually falls from March to May and again from September to December. The average temperature is about 77°F. In the 15th century, the land around Lake Mugesera belonged to the Tutsi, who were herders. They used the lake as a water source for their animals. Because pastoralists move often, the Tutsi, also known as the Hondogo, left this land in the 16th century and moved to the area between Lake Muhazi and Lake Mugesera, leaving the land around the lake empty.

Lake Mugesera is not only a peaceful place but also close to important sites like the Ntarama Genocide Memorial Center, which remembers the tragic killings during the genocide. The lake area is home to hundreds of bird species that fly from one place to another, showing their colors and singing beautiful songs.

The best time to visit Lake Mugesera is during the dry season when there is less rain. This makes the scenery perfect for photos and means fewer interruptions, creating a peaceful experience for visitors.

Lake Mugesera lets you enjoy the simple beauty of life. Don’t miss the chance to visit it.
