Mount Huye Hike – Explore Rwanda’s Coffee Trails & Scenic Views

At the southern end of Rwanda stands Mount Huye, shaped like the tip of an arrow. It welcomes visitors from all over the world. The best time to visit is during the dry season when the ground is firm and the sky is clear like a shooting star. The rainy season can be difficult, as many routes become muddy and hard to pass. When you arrive, you will be guided through the coffee farming process and may even take part in activities such as harvesting, drying, roasting, and processing.

You’ll also notice the clean, flowing water that comes from the mountain. This water is used daily by many people in southern Rwanda. As you move further through the fields, you will reach Nyungwe Forest, a place full of wildlife and activities like birdwatching and primate trekking. The soil on the mountain supports plant growth, especially coffee. At the Maraba Coffee Plantation, you will see the same farming process used by other plantations on the mountain. This will help you understand more about how coffee is grown in this region.

If you plan to hike Mount Huye, try to reach the starting point by 8:00 a.m. Be fully prepared with your hiking stick and ready to start your journey. Along the way, you will get a great view of Nyungwe Forest.
