Nyamata Church Genocide Memorial - A UNESCO Site Honoring Rwanda’s Tragedy

Nyamata Church Genocide Memorial is near the old church in Nyamata town, about 30 km from Kigali, the capital city. In 2023, UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site. The memorial shows the harsh treatment Rwandan women suffered during the genocide.

Many women were raped, brutally killed, or infected with HIV—a pain that still affects the survivors. Inside the church, you will find pictures and recordings that tell the story of what happened in 1994.

During the 100 days of the genocide, many people sought safety in the church, hoping to save their lives. No one expected the violent Hutu fighters to attack the church, but on April 10th, they did. Over 10,000 people lost their lives that day.

This place honors the memory of the 1994 genocide, where thousands were killed. To remember their loved ones, the government and families of the victims decided to keep this site as it is. No church services are held here anymore. Thanks to peace agreements, Rwanda is now a peaceful country that welcomes visitors from all over the world. Many visitors come to Nyamata Church Genocide Memorial to see and learn about this tragic history.

The genocide happened because of a lack of understanding between the Hutu and Tutsi. The Hutu accused the Tutsi of killing their leader. The real conflict began during colonial times when foreigners favored the Tutsi, allowing them to rule over the Hutu. This caused anger since the Hutu were the majority and believed they were the first people to settle the land. They fought to take power through violent means.

Many lives were lost, including the queen who was at her palace and people who took refuge in the church. The king survived because he had left the country before the fighting began. Some people fled to nearby countries such as Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya. The events were horrific and painful, and we hope nothing like this ever happens again. Even hearing the story brings tears.

Nyamata Church Genocide Memorial has been turned into a catacomb that welcomes visitors throughout the year.
