Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Airport pick-up – Kigali Rwanda
Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, your safari guide will be waiting to welcome you and drive you to Kigali city where you will spend your first night in Rwanda. If you land early in the morning, you can visit a few places around the city.
Day 2: City tour and transfer to Akagera National Park – Game drive
The Kigali Genocide Memorial, Kandt Museum, local markets, and art and craft centers are some places you will visit during today’s short city tour of Kigali. After the tour, transfer to Akagera National Park and embark on a late afternoon game drive. Overnight at the lodge.
Day 3: Akagera National Park – Game drive and boat trip
After your breakfast, head out into the park for morning game drives to explore the vast savannah. Akagera National Park is home to many animals and rich birdlife. You may see lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, hyenas, leopards, and different antelopes, among others. In the afternoon after lunch, drive to Lake Ihema for a boat safari. Overnight at the lodge.
Day 4: To Nyungwe Forest National Park
A long road trip awaits you today as you exit Akagera National Park and transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park via Kigali city. You will have a stopover along the way to have lunch and visit tourist sites. Later in the day, you will check in at your lodge in Nyungwe. Overnight at the lodge.
Day 5: Chimpanzee trekking – Canopy walk in Nyungwe Forest
After breakfast, you will be driven to the park offices for briefing and other formalities. You will then head into the forest for your chimpanzee trekking experience, where you may also see other primates and birds. After the trek, have your lunch and later go for the canopy walk for a different view of Nyungwe Forest from above. Overnight at the lodge.
Day 6: Colobus monkey trekking in Nyungwe Forest
Rise early like the previous day. After a briefing session, go into the forest to track the habituated Colobus monkeys. One of the groups has over 200 individuals, a sight to look forward to as you walk through the forest. Enjoy the experience, take pictures, and return to your lodge for lunch and relaxation. Overnight at the lodge.
Day 7: To Volcanoes National Park
Exit Nyungwe Forest National Park and drive to Volcanoes National Park on a 5-hour journey, with stopovers along the way where needed. On arrival, check in and spend the rest of the day at leisure. Overnight at the lodge.
Day 8-9: Gorilla trekking and Golden monkey trekking in Volcanoes National Park
Meet the endangered mountain gorillas and endangered golden monkeys of Volcanoes National Park on these two days of your 12-day Rwanda safari. Mountain gorilla trekking and golden monkey trekking take place early in the morning after briefing sessions at the park offices in Kinigi. You are allowed one hour in the presence of the gorillas and the golden monkeys once you find them.
Optional additional activities on these two days: a visit to the Gorilla Guardians Village or a visit to the twin lakes. Overnight in Volcanoes National Park.
Day 10-11: Lake Kivu
Transfer to Lake Kivu from Volcanoes National Park. Spend these two days at your own pace. Your safari guide will be available to advise and help with any activities you might wish to join.
Day 12: End of the 12 days Rwanda Safari
Last day of your safari. After breakfast, your safari guide will drive you back to Kigali and drop you off at the airport for your flight back home.
