Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Pick up from Kigali to Akagera National Park
Your safari tour guide will pick you up from your location in Kigali and drive you to the East of Rwanda to Akagera National Park. You will have a short Kigali city tour before setting off. Reach the park in the afternoon, have lunch at your lodge, and after go on an early evening game drive to settle into the Akagera wilderness. Look out for the different wildlife in the park, the birds, and the animals. Overnight at the safari lodge.
Day 2: Bird watching in Akagera National Park
Have an early breakfast and head out into the park for a morning birding safari. Watch the birds rise with the sun, singing and flying around in search of food to start their day. Akagera National Park is home to over 500 bird species, giving you a good chance of spotting many species in one day.
Look out for the red-faced barbet, African fish eagle, grey-backed fiscal, hamerkop, augur buzzard, grey-crowned cranes, raptors, long-crested eagle, widow birds, sunbirds, bee-eaters, among others. Also look out for different animals like elephants, lions, buffaloes, zebras, and giraffes.
Return to the lodge for lunch. Later in the afternoon, drive to Lake Ihema for more bird watching while on a boat trip on the lake. Look out for saddle-billed stork, pelicans, common cormorants, water thick-knees, squacco herons, goliath heron, white egrets, the rare shoebill stork, papyrus gonolek, swamp flycatchers, sacred ibis, kingfishers, crakes, and more. Overnight at the safari lodge.
Day 3: End of birding safari – Departure
After breakfast, your safari tour guide will drive you back to Kigali and drop you off at the airport or your preferred location in Kigali city.
