Mount Kigali – Hike, Ride & Explore Rwanda’s Capital Hill

Mount Kigali - Hike, Ride & Explore Rwanda’s Capital Hill

“The country is vast,” said Rwandan King Cyilima I Rungwe in the 14th century after exploring Mount Kigali and the surrounding areas. This statement gave the country great value, and even today it inspires pride. Because of its location and importance, the leaders chose Kigali as the capital city, supporting many economic, social, and political activities.

Mount Kigali rises to an elevation of 1,853 meters in Nyarugenge District, on the western edge of the city, ending in a river valley. It is one of the tallest hills in the city, offering wide and clear views of Kigali in all directions, which many visitors enjoy.

There are several activities you can do on Mount Kigali. Although it is called a mountain, it is more of a hill that has been changed by human development, which has reduced its plant cover. Hiking is one of the most popular activities here. The trail is not difficult and can be completed in a day. If you are fast and steady, you may finish in just a few hours while enjoying great views of Kigali city, which lies between Mount Jali and Mount Kigali and is home to the international airport.

A good place to start your hike is in Nyamirambo District. From there, you can continue north through different communities in Kigali. Another starting point is Biryogo, just opposite the Green Mosque and near the Nyamirambo Women’s Center. From there, it takes about an hour to reach Kigali Stadium, a busy area full of economic activities. Here, you can relax with a drink, enjoy some ice cream, or have a good meal.

You can also try horse riding at Fazenda Sengha, a horse-riding school where you can learn the basics and ride one of their nine horses. You’ll also have the chance to feed and care for the horses. This place is also great for filming or having a picnic with friends or family.

Interact with the local people, many of whom come to the hill for religious reasons. Some believe it is a place of healing and prayer. Don’t be afraid to talk to them—they are friendly and welcoming.
