Discounted gorilla permits in Rwanda are available during the low and shoulder seasons when parks like Volcanoes, Nyungwe, and Akagera receive fewer visitors. However, during the pandemic, all discounts were stopped.
As tourism recovered, the regular prices returned. Foreign residents and Rwandan citizens pay $500, while international visitors pay $1,500. Discounts for international tourists are only given to large groups or those visiting both Akagera and Volcanoes National Parks.
During the low season in Volcanoes National Park, usually between November and May, you can pay $1,050 per permit, which is a 30% discount off the regular fee. To enjoy this offer, you must still pay the full $1,500 upfront.
Each person can get only one discount, and it is valid for three days or two nights, mostly applied when visiting Nyungwe and Akagera National Parks.
These discounted permits are designed to attract more travelers during the rainy months, especially from March to May and into September. During this time, many lodges, campsites, and hotels also offer discounts. You can even find rooms without booking in advance, as they are not fully booked quickly.
Discounts are also offered from May to November to attract more foreign tourists, especially those whose work schedules in Europe and the United States allow them to travel during these months.
To get a permit, you must contact the Rwanda Development Board. Permits are limited, so booking early is strongly advised.
Once you choose a tour company, give them your travel dates. If permits are available, they can book for you online. You will receive an invoice for payment, and once the payment is made, a receipt will confirm that your permit has been secured.
There are also last-minute permit options if you are visiting Rwanda for a seminar or leisure trip. Be sure to book early and enjoy your gorilla trekking experience.
Even though the permits are discounted, Rwanda has stricter entry rules than Tanzania, Kenya, or Uganda. For example, all foreign travelers must have health insurance.
