Facts About Rwanda - Culture, Language & Conservation Insights

Facts are true events that happen, and below are some true details that describe Rwanda:

  • Clean country: Rwanda takes good care of its natural beauty and has even banned polythene bags. If you are visiting Rwanda, make sure you leave anything illegal behind and respect everyone you meet. Also, avoid eating on the streets because eating is considered a private activity. With these things in mind, you will have a peaceful stay in Rwanda.
  • Densely populated country in Africa: The country has over 13.4 million people, which is about the same as the population of Pennsylvania. This makes Rwanda one of the most densely populated countries in Africa, even though it is small, with about 1,360 people living in each of Rwanda’s 10,169 square miles.
  • There is a community work day: It’s no surprise Rwanda is so clean. The last Saturday of every month, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., is set aside for a national cleaning day called Umuganda. On this day, businesses close, and all transportation stops so that everyone can take part in cleaning and other community activities that benefit the whole country.
  • Kigali car-free days: To reduce air pollution, Rwanda also has car-free days on the first and third Sundays of every month. On these days, motor vehicles are not allowed on certain streets. People are encouraged to walk, run, bike, or join other healthy activities, making Rwanda a healthier place to live.
  • Rwanda uses four languages: Kinyarwanda is the local language spoken by most people, especially in rural areas. In urban centers and in offices, many people use English and French. French used to be the main official language, but over time, English became more popular to make communication easier, especially for tourists. French is now taught at the primary school level, along with Swahili. Still, many people are able to speak both languages well.
  • Home to endangered mountain gorillas: Endangered mountain gorillas live in the Virunga Mountains, which include eight volcanic peaks. In recent years, many gorillas have been seen in this area, attracting international visitors who come to see them in their natural home.
