Internet connection is easy in Rwanda because the country has a strong mobile network that reaches almost every area. With a local SIM card, you can connect to your loved ones through social media or make direct calls. SIM cards are available even in remote towns.
The main provider is MTN, which offers different data plans to suit your needs. Airtel is another good option, offering fair prices and wide coverage for both local and international users.
It is not recommended to buy a SIM card at the airport, as it is often more expensive and has limited data options. Instead, visit the provider’s official store. They offer better deals and helpful customer service to assist you in setting up your SIM card correctly.
To buy a SIM card, you must show a valid passport. This is a standard rule. If you are a local resident, a national ID can be used.
Both MTN and Airtel offer good data packages. For MTN:
- 2GB for 30 days costs RWF 2,000 (about $1.80)
- 7GB for 30 days costs RWF 5,000 (about $4.49)
- 30GB for 30 days costs RWF 10,000 (about $8.98)
For Airtel:
- 1.5GB for 30 days costs RWF 2,000 ($1.80)
- 3.5GB for 30 days costs RWF 3,000 ($2.70)
- 7GB for 30 days costs RWF 5,000 ($4.49)
- 30GB for 30 days costs RWF 10,000 ($8.98)
- 65GB for 30 days costs RWF 21,000 ($18.87)
After buying the SIM card, insert it into your phone, activate it, set up the internet settings, and you will be ready to use it.
Rwanda is growing fast in technology and has adopted high-speed 4G LTE, especially in major cities. This is possible because of the expanding fiber optic network.
During your safari, you will find many cafes in the cities and free Wi-Fi in hotels or lodges inside national parks.
Stay connected while in Rwanda.
