Kigali Basketball Arena – East Africa’s Top Indoor Sports & Events Venue

Kigali Basketball Arena is a well-known place in Rwanda, famous for hosting many important events. These include the 2019 FIBA Under-16 Women’s African Championship, the 2021 African Nations Volleyball tournament, Afrobasket, the 2019 Rwandan National Basketball League, and the playoffs in 2022 and 2023, among others.

Formerly called Kigali Arena, it is mainly used for basketball and volleyball, which is why it is now called BK Arena. It is the largest indoor arena in East Africa and hosts not only sports matches but also concerts.

Thanks to partnerships like this, Rwanda has become a top destination for tourism, sports, and investment. This has helped the country grow and earn a reputation as one of the cleanest countries in Africa.

Both locals and visitors enjoy the peaceful atmosphere at the arena. It also hosts outdoor activities such as basketball, handball, volleyball, and tennis. The arena can hold up to 10,000 people.

Construction began in January 2019 when the Rwandan government, through the Rwanda Housing Authority, partnered with the Turkish company Summa. Between 1,000 and 2,000 workers worked day and night in shifts to finish the project on time. By late 2019, the arena was 70% complete, and it officially opened in July 2019.

The arena is closely connected to basketball. The basketball league has worked with the arena on several youth programs, helping it become a top venue. In May 2022, the basketball league brought together 12 teams from across Africa. Countries that took part included Tunisia, Angola, Nigeria, Madagascar, Mozambique, Rwanda, Cameroon, Senegal, Morocco, Mali, and Algeria.

Besides sports, the arena hosts cultural events and organizes international, regional, and local competitions. These activities help young people develop their talents and also bring income to improve their lives. The arena includes 13 cafeterias and restaurants, six changing rooms, two rooms for coaching staff, a media hall, a fitness center, a control room, and more.
