Explore Mohana Plains – Top Wildlife Safari in Akagera National Park

In the Eastern Province of Rwanda, you will find the Mohana Plains, one of the largest areas in Akagera National Park. The plains are home to many wild animals, including herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores. It is best to visit Mohana Plains during the dry season when there is little or no rain.
The skies are clear, making it easier to see wildlife, and the roads are dry and easy to access. The dry months include June, July, August, September, December, January, and February. During the wet season, the roads become difficult to use, but it is a good time for bird lovers, as many bird species gather during the rain.
Most visitors travel by road from Kigali International Airport, and it usually takes about three hours to reach the plains. You can also take the lakeside road inside Akagera. Along the way, you may see African lions moving through the forest or hippos in the water, often near crocodiles.
These crocodiles hunt animals that come to drink, but it is said that it would take many crocodiles working together to bring down an elephant, and even then, it is rare—they usually only injure them.
Birds are common in the area, often found near quiet places in Akagera. Exploring the plains can take a whole day, as it borders the Nyungwe gate. If you want comfort and fun, you can book game drives that take you to the best spots to see animals like zebras, buffaloes, impalas, topis, roan antelopes, elephants, warthogs, Masai giraffes, and lions, among others.
Other activities include boat cruises where you can watch animals from the water, nature walks for those who enjoy hiking, and stargazing in the clear night sky.
For a place to rest, you can choose from several accommodations like Magashi Tented Camp, and Karenge Bush Camp, all offering good facilities.
