Rwanda is a sovereign state with a presidential system of government. Since 2000, it has been led by H.E. Paul Kagame of the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF). Rwanda is one of only three countries in the world where the majority of national parliament positions are held by women. The others are Cuba and Bolivia.
The population of Rwanda is estimated to be about 12.6 million people, living on 26,338 square kilometers of land. Most of the population is young and predominantly rural (about 85%). Rwandese are very hospitable and belong to one cultural and linguistic group called the Banyarwanda.
However, there are three sub-groups: the Twa, Tutsi, and Hutu. The Twa are pygmy people who mainly live in the forests and are considered descendants of the earliest inhabitants of Rwanda.
The common language spoken in Rwanda is Kinyarwanda, although French and English are the principal official languages. Despite the different sub-groups, Rwandans have continued to live in harmony since the post-1994 genocide period.
Today, while on a Rwanda safari, it is easy to notice not only the unity among Rwandans but also their shared aspirations. Their dances and music performances show the important role tradition plays in their lives.
Generally, tourists enjoy the country’s traditional dances and music. The Intore Dance Troupe is popular for its unique traditional and cultural dance and musical styles.
Uniqueness of Rwanda
Rwanda, also known as the Land of a Thousand Hills, is geographically unique. It is a special destination with many surprises. Firstly, it is a safe and stable safari destination, a fact enjoyed by both citizens and tourists.
Secondly, Rwanda is beautiful, with green landscapes. Five of the eight Virunga volcanoes are found in Rwanda. The country has four national parks (Nyungwe Forest National Park, Volcanoes National Park, Gishwati-Mukura National Park, and Akagera National Park), over 23 scenic lakes, and several rivers, some forming the source of the River Nile.
Rwanda is blessed not only with big game animals but also with rare primates. Some of the special primates you can see on a Rwanda tour include mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, chimpanzees, L’Hoest monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, olive baboons, pottos, and more. There are also many birds to watch while on a Rwanda safari holiday.
