Volcano Climbing in Rwanda – Hike Bisoke, Karisimbi & Sabyinyo

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single steep climb. The eight volcanoes stretch along the borders of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Five of these mountains — Bisoke, Karisimbi, Sabyinyo, Gahinga, and Muhavura — make up Volcanoes National Park, which is famous for hosting many mountain gorillas and activities like gorilla trekking.
You can start your climb from Mount Bisoke, which has a clear crater lake about 400 meters wide that lies entirely in Rwanda. This trail is popular with visitors to Volcanoes National Park. Hikers can reach the beautiful crater lake at the top and enjoy unforgettable views.
From the peak, you can also see Mount Mikeno in Congo. The climb to Bisoke is flexible, and even first-time hikers can complete it if they are physically fit. The round trip takes about six hours — four hours climbing up and two hours coming down.
You have a good chance to see mountain gorillas and golden monkeys on this trail. However, you should avoid looking directly into their eyes if they come close, as they may feel threatened and attack.
The Virunga area is full of natural beauty. Its forests are arranged in different zones, surrounding the amazing crater lakes. The area also offers wonderful views of mountain life and many bird species. It is home to many animals, some found only in the Virungas or the Albertine Rift Valley. These include golden monkeys, mountain gorillas, buffaloes, and forest elephants.
Many tourists enjoy trekking Mount Sabyinyo because of its sharp edges and unique craters. This mountain was once considered unsafe for climbing in Rwanda but was later declared safe after a clear path was found.
Today, it is a popular trail mostly guided by experienced tour guides on the Ugandan side. For all hikers, there are other less difficult trails on the mountain. Experienced hikers can also climb the other four volcanoes. If you want to reach the tops of these mountains, the trails are available, and you can book your preferred route.
Other trails in the Volcanoes National Park include Mount Muhavura Trail, Mount Gahinga Trail, and the Dian Fossey Tomb Trail, among others. It is best to visit during the dry season when the land is dry and easier to walk on.
Volcano climbing in Rwanda is a wonderful experience you will want to enjoy every time you visit Volcanoes National Park.
