Top Hiking Trails in Nyungwe Forest National Park

Nyungwe trails take you to many interesting places like Isumo Waterfalls, the canopy walk, and others, depending on where you start. You can begin from Kitabi Eco Center or Uwinka Reception Center.
If you want to end at the amazing Mount Ngabwe, it is best to book the Ngabwe Trail. This trail has camping and picnic sites, making it great for families, friends, and couples. It is a moderate climb, taking about three hours to cover 4.7 kilometers.
If you want to visit Kitabi Plantation as well, the hike can take up to eight hours. Along the way, you will hear colorful birds singing, guiding you through green lands filled with silver and colobus monkeys, as well as L’Hoest’s monkeys.
Bigugu Trail is another favorite. It climbs to about 2,367 meters above sea level and covers 13.2 kilometers. The hike takes about six hours and leads you to a place many call “land flowing with milk and honey.” The trail is named after Mount Bigugu, the highest point in Nyungwe National Park. Bird lovers enjoy this trail because they can see many different bird species. From the top, you can also see parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lake Kivu, and nearby islands.
Igishigishi Trail is another great spot in Nyungwe. It is named after the giant tree ferns found along the path. The trail is full of monkeys, birds, treetops, and wildflowers. It lies between 2,295 and 2,450 meters above sea level.
Kamiranzou Marsh is a trail leading to many waterfalls, wetlands, and swamps. It is 6 kilometers long and has many orchids, especially during the rainy season, making the walk feel magical.
Karamba Trail is known as Nyungwe’s best bird-watching spot. It is 4 kilometers long, with an elevation between 1,935 meters and 2,030 meters. This area used to be a gold mine and later a quarry where materials for building roads were taken. At one time, it was also used as an army camp.
Other hiking trails in Nyungwe include Umugote, Umuyove, Congo Nile Divide, Uwinka, and Irebero.
