Rwanda Hot Springs – Natural Wonders & Cultural Experiences

The hot springs of Rwanda are warm natural features that hold many traditional secrets and are much loved by the local people. They are formed by geothermal activity, where hot water rises from underground to the surface, creating mist over the area. The rocks around these springs go deep underground, raising questions about whether volcanic activity might happen again.
Hot springs are linked to volcanic activity and can be found as natural or swampy water sources. Each spring is different, with some producing hotter water than others. This is why it is important to be careful and always follow your guide’s instructions. They know the safe spots where you can boil an egg or enjoy a warm bath without hurting your skin.
Bugarama is one of the hot springs located about 60 kilometers from Cyangugu town. It lies at the bottom of a limestone quarry under the Cimerwa Cement Factory. From a distance, it may look like just a calm water area, but when you see the mist, you realize it is a hot spring. It is usually reached by road, and international visitors pay a fee of 45 USD.
Gisenyi hot springs are found on the eastern shore of Lake Kivu, Rwanda’s largest lake, shared with the Democratic Republic of Congo. These springs have small, clear vents that release water about 70 degrees Celsius, hot enough to boil an egg. If you have time, you can visit the Bralirwa Brewery just two kilometers away, where they make a popular local beer.
Kinigi hot springs are located near the Volcanoes National Park in the town of Kinigi. They are close to both Lake Kivu and the Iby’iwachu Culture Center, where you can enjoy traditional dancing and singing, making your visit even more special.
Nyamyumba hot springs are also near Gisenyi and attract many visitors throughout the year. The hot water bubbles up from underground, and the springs are about seven kilometers from Gisenyi town. Locals believe these waters have healing powers and spiritual importance, calling them “magical waters.” It is common to see some locals partially or fully naked, which is part of their tradition in the area.
The hot springs in Rwanda should be on your safari list, offering you a memory you will not forget.
